I hope the criteria I laid out will weed out some of the scammers but there is always that chance that it's not going to work anyway. Very early one (before I had ever finished anything) I joined a groups that paid ~$20/month for bi-weekly get-togethers in which a writing coach would critique and discuss a couple manuscripts. Neither this coach nor any of his students (that I am aware of) published anything during that time. Later, a few fellow writers who had been through the same experience labeled him [name redacted]--the man with a scam. But I can see the value of someone carefully selected to help fine-tune a manuscript. Interesting thoughts.
